First-time mother-daughter duos and longtime festivalgoers came together to celebrate the opening day of BottleRock’s 12th edition in Napa on Friday. For some, new traditions were born; for others, cherished ones continued. The music festival has become a place where generations connect, united by a shared love of music.

Chasity Boone from Redding was attending her first BottleRock with her three daughters and husband to celebrate one daughter’s 15th birthday. It was the first time any of the girls had attended a music festival. Boone and her 17-year-old daughter, Ava, wore similar nude-colored outfits with cowboy boots. They were excited to see Sublime, E-40 and Green Day.

A different mother and daughter duo, Joann Mannix and Olivia Mannix from Calistoga,  were at the Jam Cellars Main Stage for their eighth year at BottleRock. Far from being rookies, they sipped wine and danced in the company of the rest of their family. They always use the festival as an excuse to dress up and love the opportunity to get creative with their outfits. Joann wore black leggings with a black feathered top and a pink shimmer duster with wings on the back. Olivia wore a denim matching set with rhinestones from a local artist.

“It’s a nice festival where it’s nice and chill, and you can get good wine, good food, without having to run around, and you don’t have a lot of the hassle that you have with other festivals in terms of lodging and camping, and things like that. It’s literally in our backyard,” Olivia said.

“Even though it’s a huge festival, when you’re local, it feels like a small town because you run into so many friends that you know here,” Joann said. They ran into neighbors or friends making it one big party full of familiar faces.

Joann, a self-proclaimed music lover, said she always tried to pass that love down to her children. While the music, food, and wine are highlights, it’s the atmosphere — familiar, joyful, and rooted in community — that keeps them coming back year after year.

For this mother and daughter, BottleRock isn’t just a festival — it’s a family tradition that feels like home.
